Red State movie reviewHey, me again. Yesterday I went to NYC to Radio City Music Hall for the start of Kevin Smith's Red State tour where he's showing his new movie, months in advance, along with a Q&A.

The movie, Red State, is his new project, a complete turn away from his past works. Think of like Christopher Nolan directing a Spongebob movie, it would be completely different from his past works. That's how this is like.

Simple plot, 3 horny boys find a girl on the internet and go one night to find her. They get kidnapped and wake up tied up, locked up, and in a church. The church is like that Westboro Baptish Church, which even gets mentioned, but with guns and more crazy-ness. Events unfold that lead to a WTF ending that I liked actually due to its difference-ness.

If anyone is looking for silent bob or even jason mews to pop up, don't expect it. The ONLY past cast memebers he got were from Jersey girl and his wife, no one else.

I'm not gonna say too much to spoil anything but wow, the film is sorta like a soda can when shaking it, it builds and builds, and builds, and then exploads. There's like, not joking, a 10-20 minute scene of a guy preaching, yes, that's there, but right after that, it's like just action packed and shooting non stop until the very end.

For people who don't like violence but like Kevin Smith, watch out, there's a ton of violence. Nothing too gross, as I've heard people say this looks like hostel, this is not that gory. I'd say this is as gory as maybe District 9 or so. Around that border. Just lots of guns and violence.

Also, don't expect ANYTHING. If you think something might happen, like it does it other movies, it doesn't. The film completely changes everything about good and bad in film making and makes you so glad it's so different.

Acting, was, of course, amazing. With people like John Goodman, Melissa Leo, Betty Aberlin, and some others who I can't find on imdb cause it's not there, for some reason, completely up the acting factor in this film. The 3 boys and 1 girl are amazing for the scenes they are in.

Cinematography, was, wow. He shot it using RED cameras along with the smaller Canon DSLR cameras (for scenes like showing someone in a cage (NOT a spoiler, it's in the teaser, you can see it for a second there.) He cuts so quickly and uses shakey cam for the first time. It's like someone else made this film because the edits and cuts are as consistent and fast as Michael Bay's attention spam, it's REALLY fast. Quick, gritty cuts. There's no bright colors here people.

Music, very little surprisingly. Just the preacher on a piano for most of the film.

Overall, I'd say this is a contender, or already is, for one of Kevin Smith's best films in his career. If not the best, then 2nd or 3rd place at least. If you think Cop Out was garbage, like me, this makes up for it in SO many ways.

If it wasn't for the lengthy, but intreging 10-20 minute preach that just slowed the film down a bit, I would give it a 10/10. BUT, alas, it has to be lowered to an 9/10. STILL, a great rating.

As for the q&A, well, it was funny, as always, but this time he had the whole cast there, except for one of the 3 boys who couldn't make it. But they mentioned things like Big Lebowski for John Goodman, which I posted HERE, Watch it, it's great, Melissa Leo's oscar curse word and the fact they can use her for marketing parts of the film, and about kevin smith retiring. It was a GREAT night. Hope you guys get the chance to see the film as soon as possible. It's probably my favorite film of 2011 so far and it's already the 3rd month this year! See it when you can!

Thanks for reading, if you did.
