Another E3 gone.E3 is over, it was a good one. It had to be a good one or our beloved games industry would be heading into dark, dark times. But like I said luckily it was a great E3 that showed the immense potential of gaming going into the future.
First lets get this out of the way, Microsoft is making some horrible decisions with policies and Sony is feeding off and reacting to it. Yes the online check is bullshit and erects a barrier to entry for this console that many can't or won't approach. I've heard arguments (tho not many) that the online check is a good thing and is the first step for Xbox One to become a Steam like service... This probably isn't true and if the sales and overall Steam like mentality to digital distribution were to be adopted by MSFT it will only happen as a reaction to a continually declining approval from the consumers. Much like Sony after years of poor sales and the hack that took down their network led to an overall "fuck Sony" consensus and what we got from all that was Playstation Plus.. a great service that was 100% Sony saying "PLEASE LOVE US AGAIN." Also did anyone notice that EA wasn't at the Sony conference? I think this is indicative of these DRM policies MSFT is employing on the Xbox One being mostly at the behest of publishers like EA (EA is who we have to blame for the bullshit "Online Pass" and the debacle that was the SimCity launch). You honestly think Steam-esk sales on digital content will be a thing when the biggest Third Party there was EA, the publisher that made their own digital distribution system, shitty Origin, to get away from Steam? Just my opinion.
A brief thought on used games, the so called "evil" that is used games is one of the weirdest points of contention within the industry. Publishers whining endlessly about the money they lose from used games while at the same time partnering up with Gamestop the biggest seller of used gamse for exclusive preorder bonuses. This somewhat colors the used game argument a shade of bullshit for me. The real answer to used games is coming from the developers this upcoming generation. Many games have adopted a ever existing multiplayer option, where your game will be able to seamless include other players without the need for matchmaking, lobbys, etc... a gaming experience that is neither exclusively single player nor multiplayer. The days of trading in a game you liked because there's nothing left to experience in it are hopefully coming to a close. Trading in a game you don't like, definitely needs to continue being a thing that can happen. Just a thought.
I'm excited for what's to come, but this E3s best of show for me would probably have to be: The Division, Witcher 3, Infamous Second Son, and Titan Fall. What's yours?
