I'm glad my organizational meeting in the UK isn't until the end of August. I think we still have to compete with the Paralympics, but that shouldn't be nearly as bad...
I live in the UK, about 20 miles from London, I just want to see what the hell our opening ceremony will have. The chinese and greek have a strong cultural background, but England doesn't really.
We have a few famous landmarks to parade and that's about it. I guarantee there will be a model of big ben there for example. There are some things we are known for, such as double decker red buses, but this is very minor and doesn't really come into national identity in my opinion. It's like the USA parading yellow taxis because it is something the rest of the world perceives you have, even though it isn't something you consider a part of your country.
We have very little national identity. The only thing we pride ourselves on is WWI and WWII, but it's not like you can parade about killing Nazis in the opening ceremony.
I've actually surprised myself with how much I've been watching of it, and how much I am lacking the expected disappointment that I'd prepared myself for.
I mean, the whole industrial revolution part at the beginning of the opening ceremony I thought was actually pretty awesome. And the fact the queen actually allowed herself to be used in what was effectively a comedy James Bond sketch? They had some pretty decent music in the history of media portion too. And of course Rowan Atkinson needs no introduction.
Then the British performance has surprised allot of the public here. Sure they have the home group advantage, but still I'm shocked with how well we're doing in the medal tables.
There needs to be an app where your smartphone punches you in the face if you ever post a racist, offensive comment like that. Maybe people would stop being total assholes in such a public way.
I know it's not every single American, but why are we so terrible with sportsmanship? What is it about people in the US that makes them awful losers and inconsiderate winners?
Clusterfuck.

The killing Nazis idea would be very "interesting"
lulz

I know, I have been really caught up in the olympic fever.

Well at least we can see their names.
I'll let you know in a few days when we see the closing ceremony over here.
Opening.
I'm with you on that one, Rowan Atkinson FTW.
The opening was less about famous British people, but more about Britain itself. The closing was really just singing.
Yeah. There was a touch of humour in the opening that even Boris dancing couldn't match.
Some of those famous people aren't that famous now (Kaiser Chiefs) and some won;t be famous by the next olympics (Jessie J with any luck).
Their is a ten min version of that.
"Natasha! Is time we must catch moose and squirrel!"
