Favorite game worldSo every year during the Tour De France I get in the mood to play the good old MMO Final Fantasy 11 (is it odd to get in the mood for a game at the same time every year?) now while I enjoy the game play and the story isn't too bad either they aren't the reasons why I always come back to the game, the thing I enjoy most is the the game world itself. The cities always felt like real cities to me, the style and moves look cool, the races and mythology are interesting to me and the general tone of the game is spot on.

So my question is, are there any games that you play or have replayed just because you enjoy the world it takes place in?

Star Wars Galaxies. Ten worlds, all open with tons of things to see and around 10km any direction. I used to spend hours on Yavin IV running around exploring.

GTA series also has amazing game worlds to kill time loafing around in.

I don't play it anymore, but I loved how big the World of Warcraft was and I loved getting to explore the places I read/heard about, or only saw a fraction of, in the previous games. Almost every area had some sort of historical significance and it turned me in to a Warcraft lore and geography nerd for a few years.

Tamrial (Elder Scrolls) , the Wasteland (Fallout), the whole galaxy (Mass Effect), Rapture (Bioshock), and the Halo Universe.

I always liked the idea of Rapture from Bioshock. I think it would be a really interesting place(if it was non-destroyed.) Plus the idea of scientists with little to no limitations creating things to make life is a compelling idea. I always wonder if it would really yield results

The world of Alan Wake just had a great atmosphere. It felt like a realistic place.

Mass Effect games, because whatever I did had some sort of effect, and I didn't just walk up and ask people for their life-threatening problems and daily dilemmas - I listened and heard it in the GAME ENVIORNMENT - that for me is big, and is what makes it such an awesome world to explore and affect ;)

Well we can be other color where discrimination isn't involved. Especially when you're the "wild one." You can be whatever you want if you put your mind at it.

I've always loved Hyrule, especially from Twilight Princess since it was so big and open...

I agree with Bioshock and Alan Wake as well!

Washington DC in Fallout 3. I played it a couple times because the environment was so awesome and it was a great game

Red Dead Redemption because of the detail, things to do, and diversity. I also thought the galaxy in the MMO EVE was pretty sweet, just in sheer size.

The universe of Mass Effect is one of my favorites- it is just so fantastically well built and complex. And though it's far, far more simplistic, I must say I'd love to live in the Pokemon world.

You know what? this is a question that i have ever asked myself. What world have i been in that was so involving, so beautiful that i could call it my number one world? probably the world from FFVII and before you call me a massive hipster i do think you all have really great ones too, its just that FFVII stuck with me till now.

I'd say Skyrim because it's so incredibly immersive. It's the one open world RPG where I can thoroughly enjoy myself simply by walking around and looking at stuff.

This one took me a while, but I think I figured out the answer.. I think. Just Cause 2. That game is so incredibly pretty its amazing, the city with the the hotels is just stunning -- along with the rain forrest it was just fun. My only gripe I guess would be the lack of cities/sprawl but I realized the complexity might just be too much.

tl;dr
Just Cause 2

I have been really interested in the game Risen lately. That and the Gothic universe from Gothic I-III, The characters and just the way it's borderline dark minded. I can play those games and just go explore. My brother and I loved the world and would constantly be on that game. I think though that the amount of mundane things you can do in those games (like, cook food, own a house, just be a blacksmith and forget the missions) make me bias towards it though. But I also have more worlds than that I would love to be in such as Skyrim/Morrowind, also Rapture.

OH and just because I saw a picture just now on FB about Steampunk. I wouldn't mind a world like the Arcanum: Steamworks and Magicka Universe.

There are a lot of really amazing worlds out there, but Skyrim takes the cake for me. The visuals alone are just so well done and I feel there is a true sense of scale to it all. I love Rapture as well, but one room of flashing lights and leaking water looks like any other room of flashing lights and leaking water.

Well I think when those of us who said Rapture would be cool, are saying so as if it hadn't been trashed and exploded.

Haha good point. I love the design and thought of it all, but I was thinking purely gameplay, need to look beyond that.

All of the Fallout games, I'm a big fan of the 1950's version of the future being turned into a post-apocalyptic wasteland also the soundtracks for 3 and New Vegas are awesome!

I enjoy the authentic feel of the LA Noire universe (I'm a sucker for historical games [AC as well]), but my heart will always be in Hyrule. I also am playing through the Half-life games so I really like that universe as well.

I always wondered if they were gonna make a version of Rapture that wasn't trashed. I think it would be pretty good.
Though in the Bioshock book, it all started getting bad when Adam and Plasmids were introduced.
