Someone on reddit made a damn good point, the director's cut of this is probably going to make a lot more sense. Now that I think of it though, that version will probably be 6 hours long.

I think a lot of people are giving this movie a pass, I wont be paying for the directors cut because the movie was poor quality (assume I cant swear); If you had never seen an aliens movie , you would walk out of that movie and be like WTF was that , its not even a prequel, its in the universe so you should not have needed to have seen the other movies.

I would very much like to take some 20yo into this movie , have no one explain anything to them , and they have never seen an aliens movie and see what they think .

no spoilers above other than i think it is crap

I disagree with you on "having to see Alien" for you to enjoy it. It stands on its own asking more questions than it answers in the same way as 2001 or Blade Runner and perhaps if you wanted Colonial Marines on Ice: the Before Story, yeah you'll be disappointed because it's really not about the action as much as it is about asking questions. Colored by the Alien series, it is hampered by this somewhat and moreso if you're a fan of the AVP universe considering it isn't Canon to it. Also, I always avoid those trailer reviews and I stayed away from anything about Prometheus leading up to it and made my brain go off during the trailer other than to say "Damn that sound is aggravating even after 30 years" so maybe that helped my enjoyment of the film as well. Is it perfect? No. Are there problems? Absolutely. But it's pretty damn enjoyable with some great characters like Shaw, David, and Janek (as well as Janek's pilots) and stellar visuals.

As for the ip-shay alling-fay? People do the same thing with ees-tray.

well i mean for example the nature of the black goo, at no point does anyone try and ask , question, explain the properties of it, generally in a movie they would at least try and figure it out, forge ting where it is from or what it does, your expected to link the maggot's to the snakes , im not sure people put that together . and that is just the beginning , the navigator that gets his face burnt off by acid , whats going on there? its not common to be killed by acid and turn into some form of super human? and the guy that gets impregnated\killed by the snake , what happens to him ? one would think something?

fair enough , is there an theory on why they have left invitations for us to come to their nuclear silos? it did not seem like a trap, or a major city , not trying to be painful in this thread , only reason i cam over was about the recent discussion of trailers that spoil parts of movies thought there may be a conversation going on already. cheers for input all!

Not that I know of? Perhaps warning, perhaps the Engineers were sloppy or our ancient ancestors were more perceptive than we gave them credit for being? Not sure.

yeah that's about my best guess they left postcards all over the earth showing where they would be returning next, but sure is a stretch, they do say its not a visible planet from earth so, we have to been shown images of the planet.
not only that we have been shown images of their system , all over the earth over millions of years.

so were left with they showed us a picture of a solar system over and over for thousands of years in the hope to teach us not to go there ?

edit sorry: on further thinking its probably a top dog fail safe , if any of the planets they create become that advanced you point them to that planet to be destroyed, good way to make sure your kids never get smarter than you.

Scott stepped on a lot of people's toes by retconning everything to make AVP effectively non cannon. And by AVP i mean the games books and movies combined. What a dick move.

Let's be honest though, the AVP series on the whole was a mangled piece of cobbled together fan fiction, not the least being the sleigh ride of friendship.

The comics were alright, but at the same time, you had stuff like Batman vs Predator. I can side with the fans of the books getting the shaft, but the movies were terrible, and the games really had no story.

I still don't see a real counter argument to my declaration of this being a shitty ret-con. Anyone up for a real debate on this?

Also: dacalac, you notice the name of the guy who made that chart?

"Shitty ret-con"isn't really what could be called a substantial argument.

Yeah that really isn't a discussion at all, more just a statement that you don't like it. I'm not really surprised anyway, the books and the movies were a reimagining of the universe anyways, like the ultimate marvel series. It all spawned in the 90s at the same time as Robocop vs Terminator. It was during a time where people were looking to make money and fanboys wanted to see "What if" scenarios. And then down the road, some hollywood execs looked at it and thought "cha ching."

Back to the point, this is a thread for Prometheus anyways, not AvP.

Well, I just finished seeing the movie today. I went in with only the understanding that the movie was somehow related to Alien. I had read enough to know that it was not a direct prequel so I wasn't expecting it to be st on LV 426 or anything like that.

So that being said, I really enjoyed the movie. So I gotta go with the ship captain in a belief that LV 223 was a military base and they created the DNA altering substance and lost control of it (man that never happens ha) As far as I'm concerned, the film can stand out on it's own. It's clear to see that there are ties to Alien, with the mural of the Xenomorph in that chamber and the cockpit/design of the ship. and of course the giant squid like facehugger and the alien the Engineer gave 'birth to'

And just to add some talk of 'canon'...there was an original Aliens comic published in 1988 about Hicks and Newt back on earth 10 years after Aliens, and then of course Alien 3 f-d everything up...and we're not even touching Ressurection. (I like to pretend that movie doesn't exist) As for the AvP thing, it's a nifty crossover that lead to a few gun games and if people want to consider this stuff canon, then this movie in no way shape or form screws with that canon. If you doubt that, I refer you to the scene when the humans discover the decapitated Engineer and the chamber. There was the Xeno mural dating back over 2,000 years...and it was clear they were prepping for a war, against who? No one really knows.

Definitely disappointed with the script. Visuals were great, along with the actors, but the dialogue was so meh, except Fassbender.

I though the dialogue was overall very good, however the line
"If we don't stop them know, there wont be a home to go back to" made me giggle, and i don't think it was supposed to.

the only thing I didnt like was after somebody escapes the medical area and gets you know what removed nobody even mentions or asked what happened to her, or why did she attack to people and leave a mess in the medical pod thing. Its completely ignored???

I feel like this movie is getting alot of negative reviews and honestly, I don't understand why.

I saw it last night. I've never seen an Alien movie before so I wasn't too excited to see it. In fact, I was asking the person I went with right before why he was dragging me to such a shitty summer movie. When the credits rolled my only reaction was my jaw dropped. Literally. The acting was great, the effects were great, the storyline was okay but not completely terrible. I feel like there's so much good and so little bad. It's one of the most beautiful movies I've ever seen. So I have no complaints about the directing. I just don't see what the problem is.

Personally, I absolutely loved this film. I even thought about going back to see it again on the big screen.
