Ridley Scott's PrometheusAs of yet, we have few details of
Prometheus, but...
*it's due out June 8, 2012
*it
WILL be set in the
Alien universe.
*Ridley Scott is directing and he said during a Q&A that the story will be developed and produced as two separate films
*The first drafts of the screenplays were written by newcomer screenwriter Jon Spaihts with Lost co-exec producer Damon Lindelof doing a rewrite on the first film.
*Ridley Scott stated that the story will take place in 2085, approximately three decades prior to the events of the first Alien film, before the birth of Ellen Ripley.
*The story, which originally went through several drafts, features a female lead character and will present a "technologicall
y feasible" view on the early stages of "near faster-than light" travel. It will also focus on terraforming and Weyland Industries before its merger with the Yutani Corporation.
*The films will explore the nature and origin of the unknown extraterrestri
al race, who only had a brief appearance in the first Alien as the derelict spaceship's pilot. Scott stated that the films would be about "gods and […] engineers of space" and hinted at the possibility that the Xenomorph Alien was designed either as a biological weapon or as a means to "clean up" planets. Scott also announced that the original Zeta II Reticuli planetary system will be part of the prequel story.
They will be in 3-D as confirmed by Ridley, with the darkness and shadows being added in post-production, as 3-D movies need high lighting levels.
*Arthur Max is heading a small Pinewood Studios art department, whose task is to deconstruct the first Alien and reverse-design the prequels from the original art and visuals.
*The Alien itself will be reenvisioned as a progenitor of the received form of the Xenomorph, and Scott reported that he had planned to contact H. R. Giger for possible artistic collaboration.
*Noomi Rapace stars
*Scott said that
Prometheus is a 'jumping-off point' for the
Alien films.
*Charlize Theron, Idris Elba, Sean Harris and Kate Dickie are reportedly on board
*On February 12, 2011 in an MTV interview Fassbender stated the film was still an Alien prequel, saying, "Prometheus is absolutely connected to Alien... There's a definite connecting vein."
*...an insider told Sky Movies, "I’ve had further confirmation that the Space Jockey creature is definitely in Prometheus and has been built as an eight foot animatronic...
I’ve also had it confirmed that HR Giger is working on the project but only in an advisory capacity. By the way, people are going to be in for a shock when they sit down to watch Prometheus and there’s an enormous semi-human head piloting a spaceship.’ "

Not if they read that post.

I love how it pays homage to the original Alien trailer. It even has that same eerie scream/siren that echoes throughout the whole thing.
Michael Fassbender as a series 8 robot. Creeptastic.
It didnt really take 30 years to make for Fx reasons or cameras, but because he was waiting for someone to write a script that he liked and answered the questions he was also asking... ie what was the space jockey, how did it get there and what the aliens are...
I didn't read about it at all. going in with no expectations (except for it being directed by Ripley Scott of course) I thought it was a great movie.
Still though, I am confused. Is it supposed to be a prequel? I looked around for the answer only finding mixed results and Ripley Scott saying "no". But then there is the "proto" xenomorph at the end. I didn't understand if he was just sprinkling in ideas and re-imaginings from the Alien films, or if it was in fact a blatant way of saying it's a prequel/set in the same universe. The whole movie just kind of threw me off with the creatures that were similar to those seen in Aliens, but not exactly the same. For now I will assume it is some kind of prequel, and future movies will bridge the gaps.
*Ridley, I always make that damn mistake.

If you check the Nerdist youtube channel, there's a sit down with Ridley Scott and he clarify's it. It's not a prequel because they didn't want to confine the movie to just the alien universe, which I take as they plan to make more movies that expand beyond this one even. Maybe that's wishful thinking. It did start as a straight up prequel though before they changed direction. If it had been a straight up prequel, the movie would have ended with the Space Jockey still in the pilots seat, dead, surrounded by unhatched face huggers.
Honestly, the trailers gave me a totally different impression, but it was so much more than what they made it out to be.
And then there's the
vagina-cobrasproto-facehuggers... No, Mr. Biologist-in-a-hoodie, the vagina stalk does not want to be your friend.Post edited 6/09/12 10:47AM
Evolution in action, they knew how to make themselves seem appealing to men.
You know, I've never tried to use spoilers over quotes, now I know what that looks like and so do you! Seriously, though, you should know better than to go and look at a movie thread before seeing it, so if any of this slightly greyed out text spoils the flick for you, it's your own damn fault.
Yup. Scott lied about that just like he lied about Theron's character making it through to the end of the film. Well, she was close, but bitch didn't think to tuck and roll. Or it could just be a different ship. Otherwise there would have been debris of another ship nearby the one Janek and crew took out with ramming speed.

I thought about that too, but like you said they'd have to see the second ship in Alien and also I'd imagine they'd run into this new form of Alien... wait, what do we call it, a xenomorph? I feel like that's the term someone coined that at some point. What of the new creature, it's clear that the engineers create new life by morphing old life repeatedly, so is this new creature just a precursor or just a total re-imagining? It looks slightly human and fishlike.
Not new form, first form. It's the proto-xenomorph and very reminiscent of the goblin shark in its retractable jaw. Google videos of the goblin shark for eternal nightmares.
You see the friggen ship collision in one of the pre release trailers , i saw that months ago -thanks!!
Her boyfriend or whatever is burnt with a blowtorch, she cuts an alien out of her chest and does not have a single question to ask , nothing not one thing , wtf you would think she may be like o by the way wtf was that thing i just cut out of me.
I feel the pace of the movie was tooo rushed , the action seen went so fast the only part i really saw was him get run over by a car.
the alien people infected with aliens there was no suspense for example , she gets it out of her like 30 seconds after she becomes aware it is inside her . in alien for example there is more suspense around the infection.
I know quite a bit of the unversed law and I came out with more questions than i went in i can only assume this was a setup for another movie.
Was there any point to the wayland chick even being in the movie? were we supposed to hate her? dont really get her part at all, why do we care she is the daughter of wayland ?
at a guess the next movie will involve her being picked up floating through space in a similar way to aliens
anyway i also found it strange that the 2 that get lost in the ship happen to be the people that friggen mapped the entire tunnel, and that they did not notice the chatter about everyone leaving.
and that they decided to go have a play in the black goo
guy1: yo dude these bodies are scary, lets go away of where the captin said there may be a life form
guy2: yeah good idea
guy1: o here is that big head room
guy2: wanna go play in the black goo
guy1: you know it!!
guy2: o look snake that makes a hissing noise
guy1: must be friendly lets give it a pat.
-shake head
I can completely agree that the whole thing felt very rushed, but that felt intentional to me. She didn't question what she just pulled out of herself, because there were much bigger questions at play, and as she knew it was a product of the Engineers, she knew it was far beyond her comprehension but well within their power. It was off putting at first for me that the movie was nothing as I expected it, a lot like watching Blade Runner the first time, but I really appreciate how the movie was about bigger questions than just minutia of dealing with how a monster "works"
as for the spoiled by trailer part, you sir, are absolutely right. But there were enough surprises that I could overlook it. The whole running from the crashing ship though seemed goofy as hell to me though. Like a pirates of the Caribbean joke.
yes you are correct. These are the very first versions of the xenomorphs that we see in the Alien series. HR Giger came back to do a reverse engineering of the original aliens so you see the progression. Although this isn't a direct prequel it still takes place in the same universe as the original series.
I believe there are plans to expand on this new series which may eventually lead to a final prequel that takes place directly before the old alien series.
Overall I really loved the movie. At first I wasn't enjoying it that much only because I was trying to compare it to the first Alien movie instead of judging it as it's own movie. After I let go of all the hype and expectations, I really enjoyed the movie. My GF and I spent the next few hours discussing all the little theories and plot details that we'd piece together. I'd highly suggest seeing it in IMAX 3d. The fact it was filmed in 3D makes all the effect feel a little more subtle and natural. Definitely want to see it again!!
yeah i agree about the pirates thing made me think of that too, i understand what your saying about bigger questions to ask but she does not even say anything to the cyborg or weyland when she goes into the room with the 2 of them. If the cyborg had basically just tried to freeze me with an alien inside , i had beaten 2 people up, cut an alien out of my chest and was then given a perfect opportunity i would have taken a bat to that old man right there. if she is that smart to not need to ask about the alien she is smart enough to know that weyland was trying to secure her as an alien flavoured popsicle.
In reply to ChrisOdgers, #29:
I had the exact same thought when she ran into that room, but then my mind rationalized that she didn't even want to bring it up it out of fear that they'd attempt to kill her/study her, etc.
I hate my brain, there was a second part I wanted to talk about from that scene, but I got distracted by a dog food commercial...
