Gay MarriageThere were two topics pertaining to gay rights in the past. One had a last post from a year ago. The second was about 6 months ago. I think they qualify as "dead" by now.
So here we are. Should gay marriage be legalized? Why or why not? Should gays get any other rights? Is there really a true reason to be for or against gay marriage?
But first, the rules:
1. Spell properly and refrain from excessive swearing. ("u fucking bitch ur just a pussy, u dumbass. go 2 hell" = big no-no.) 2. Refrain from gay "slang" as well. (flamer, faggot, queer, dyke are also big no-nos.) 3. Do not use your religion as an excuse to be against gay marriage.
Example:
Bad - The bible says that gay marriage is wrong so clearly all gays are an abomination of nature!
Good - Considering that religion is a big part of why gay marriage is illegal, then... 4. Feel free to voice your opinion on the subject, keeping in mind that opinions are not facts, and it is impossible to win an argument or debate by acting like your opinion is the only correct one. If you seriously want to get into a debate and try to come out the winner, do your research. You never win a debate by having the "I'm right you're wrong" attitude. You have to prove someone wrong. You have to prove yourself right.
5. No personal attacks unless they are clearly deserved.
6. If two people are getting into a personal conversation, it's best taking to messages or comments if it begins to both (or could bother) others in the thread.
Personally, I am for gay marriage and gay rights. I also believe that gays deserve the right to not be ridiculed or judged (similar to the rights the physically and mentally handicapped have). I've written an essay as to why the religious argument and the "gays are this and that so they don't deserve rights" argument both fail. You can read it here.

They can have the right to not be ridiculed or judged as soon as people stop calling me an asshole. Everyone is judged, deal with it.
Other than that, yeah, let em marry. They can have there cake and decorate it too.
this is indeed a good issue to talk about
People are judged regardless
that is true
but hey
if you don't like it
why try and change it?
The idea of them marrying is a great decision
they find someone they like
they should marry then
just like a man and a woman
and everyone should have rights
it's just a natural thing
as long as they aren't trying to abuse them, let them have rights
The search function is your friend
Lock.
I already explained that thread is dead.
Why the hell is that written like it's prose?
You know what....I don't want to know....
It's not locked, use the existing thread.
Unfortunately, that thread basically covered everything that could be covered.
Unless there is someone willing to debate the points brought up in it, any new debate would just be regulars referring you to that one.
In reply to Mongopwn, #2:
Have you ever heard of Matthew Shepard? He was killed for being gay. Do you think that's fair?
But apparently people can't get that through their heads. How does that even make sense?
We are talking about gay marriage. Not inter-racial marriage.
I think everyone agrees in maintaining racial purity across the board.
...
Even worse: Interracial gay marraige.
Stop making up crap.
Keeping it in the family aye?
Who seriously cares who marries who? Wasn't interracial marriage legalized years ago?
Er...wasn't that on Family Guy?
Why did you even have to ask that question? Or do they still have those different water fountains and pools in Idaho?

I read his post as "Interracial marriages are wrong." Even if he meant it as a joke.
Of-fucking-course-not.
People get killed every day for being something or other, a lot of them just idiots. (I'm biased, I live near Detroit). Doesn't mean there should be special laws against it. A crime is a crime.
Here's Obama's stance on gay rights:
Except that certain heinous crimes are motivated by more than just anger or stealing. Hate crimes are just as bad, if not worse than regular crimes.
Living near Detroit, or any bad city, doesn't give you the right to be biased in anyway.
A lot of people are biased, though. Especially when it comes to issues like this. (I was talking to a girl who is "for gay marriage" but finds them to be disgusting and total freaks. Apparently all gay men wear tight pants and have high voices, and all gay women have short hair and are tom-boys.
A crime is a crime, why should the motives matter?
You shoot some guy because he's an asshole, 20 years in prison.
Shoot some guy because hes gay, why should your punishment be any different? Your still acting retarded.
Yes it does. It could make me like Toronto(or rather, pretty much anywhere but Detroit) more, and that would be perfectly reasonable.
Stereotyping is fail...
Not really, motivation for a crime has always played a part in how the crime is interrupted. A crime of passion is different than a premeditated murder. Hate and bigotry factors in there if it is a factor.
You're acting as if murder is something anyone can commit.
Also, murder is murder. But if someone plans out the murder and tries to get away with it, or if they kill multiple people, their punishment is different than someone who kills in self-defense. Both have motive. But there's a big difference in why the murder occurred. So, no, motive does matter.
Which is exactly my point.
You don't intentionally shoot something you do not hate. A crime of passion isn't usually as severe a punishment as a similar one with prior intent. So just because I hate someone because he's black, instead of him being an asshole, I should be punished more?
I guess the idea is for people to have a PERSONAL reason to kill someone.
Evaluating the motive for murder is a well established part of the sentencing procedure. It may not have any baring on guilt, but it does have a measure of how you treat the criminal.
If someone killed in a fit of passion, the odds are that they are not going to do it again.
If someone got into a feud and killed someone after careful planning and much calculation, there is a good chance they will do the same again if they get into a similar situation.
When it comes to racially motivated crimes, the suggestion is that they are extremely likely to go back to the old habits. Ingrained racism is harder to get out of the system than, say, anger at an individual and a quart of whisky.
