I picked water bender, Foggy Bottom style 'yo. Pass me that leaf!
This just hits a little too close to home to ignore.
I had a thought about the discussions about the limits of bending. In particular and interestingly with water bending we see them take water out of the air, out of plants, collect sweat and clouds, but we never see them draw water up from the water table in the ground beneath them. I see no reason to think that they can't do it, it just has never come up. Interesting.
Maybe it's too far into Earthbender territory when it's under the ground like that for them to just pull it out of the ground. I was just re-watching one of the episodes in order to help get myself ready for the premiere of the new series, and one moment that comes to mind is from "The Avatar State" when the General kicks a bunch of dirt up to neutralize Katara's water by turning it into a bunch of mud. Since Katara's a pretty talented waterbender even by that point but doesn't make any effort to separate the two, it's conceivable that pulling it from under the water table is just too much work to be worth the effort most the time.
Not saying it can't be done, I'm just guessing that most the time, there's FAR more efficient means of getting water to bend.
So anyone else think that the anti-bending movement will turn out to somehow be responsible for Aang's death? It's been pointed out before, but he seems to have died pretty young, especially considering that Avatar Kyoshi lived to be like 230. I mean, he couldn't have been older than like mid-60s when he died. The wiki says that being frozen for 100 years eventually took a toll on his body, but maybe that's just what people think? Maybe they just want to move past Aang and needed an excuse for the show for why he died young and it doesn't mean anything, but maybe it does. Imagine the rage of the world as a whole and powerful people like Tenzin and Katara in particular, if it came out that these guys had engineered Aang's death to give them time to prepare things while the new Avatar was too young to notice.
And something else that probably should have occured to me sooner: Toph's daughter uses Beifong, her mothers last name. So did Toph not marry? Until it's proven otherwise I'm going to choose to assume that Lin is the product of an affair that Toph and Sokka had at some point, making her Tenzin's cousin.
The ABM being involved in Aang's death would be very interesting. I would love to know how they were able to take him down seeing as he can see when someone is close by with his earthbending.
I feel Toph would be wearing the pants in the relationship with whomever she's with so I'm sure her "partner" had no choice in the matter what last name Lin would take.
I say he's the love child of Smelerbee and Longshot. Or better still, Sokka and Suki's kid. How messed up would that be? Or even I insanier, Sokka went insane and faked his own death before starting the anti bending movement.
In reply to datalaughing, #8050: Could be... They'd have had to be fairly sneaky... As the Interactive tour of Republic City[spoilerish] suggests, his life was reduced by the iceberg (think of it less as a 100 yr nap and more like a 100 yr Avatar state), and as Aang recognised his health was fading he commissioned the White Lotus to help the young Avatar and such (under White Lotus decrip.). Then again, this could have just made it all the more easier for them.... Oh and the tour has wonderful graphics imo...(except for maybe the 3d statue)
In reply to datalaughing, #8051: I considered this (well not the Sokka part) but it could also be the fellow took her name or she/they chose to keep her world famous name instead. Then again: Has anyone else noticed that Toph is the only person in the Avatar world with a last name? Merited she was famous for it, but I don't actually think the N/S water tribes used surnames (Hakoda of the Water Tribe). Although, we all know the fire-nation does we just don't hear them often... hrm...
In reply to datalaughing, #8054: Amon: Secret love child of Ty-Lee and Sokka...? Honestly though, whenever I hear it, I doubt anyone major in the series will ever be 'secret love child'... I mean, it's a kids show...
Crack theory #473: Amon is Meelo. Motivation: Meelo. Unlikely because: ...Meelo?
Meelo! Tehlu above, it all makes so much sense now! Wait ...
You want a crack theory? Here you go:
After the War, The Duke was captured by a group of rogue fire nation soldiers, tortured and disfigured for his involvement in the invasion, and then kept as a slave on their ship for over a decade, he was freed when the former soldiers, now pirates, we're themselves defeated. Angry at the world, his enemies who did this to him, and his allies who, not knowing what had happened, never came to rescue him, and feeling that benders are the source of all the world's biggest problems, he goes out into the world, wearing a mask, determined to destroy them all. Yeah, that's what I'm going with for now.
No spoiler text because there's clearly nothing spoilery about that random insane theory.
In reply to RobbyMac217, #8056: Ah, yes! The second person in the series with a surname... I wonder if the Satos are related the Mechanist/Teo... Or Scratch that, they are descendants of colonials [L]
What if Amon is Jet? Say he survived his encounter with Long Feng, at the cost of Smellerbee and Longshot sacrificing themselves to get Jet to safety. Jet becomes even more driven against benders in general, and no longer has Smellerbee and Longshot as his voices of reason. After an encounter with a firebenders and/or earthbenders, he is gravely injured. To fix this, he has a few mechanical appendages made, and a mask for grotesquely scarred face. Now he leads the Anti-Bender Revolution, waiting for the day he can erase bending altogether.
I was not aware of this thread. I am very happy now. Also, love all the pictures and Gifs. Now I need to read this and continue not studying for my test today!
It's not just the thread. It's the entire internet. I tried to start studying for today's test on Monday....instead I watched Adam and friends play Star Wars.

I was curious why cars were called Satomobiles. For those who didn't see it in the tour, they're named after it's creator, Hiroshi Sato.

'ello suppi. And Mai.
It bothers me that her name is spelled 'Mai' when it's pronounced 'Mei'. Please tell me I'm not the only one.
Nope.
Bugs me too.
Flamey-o sir...Flamey-o. What a great moment. Have you seen the first episode yet?
Of Korra? Oh yeah. Episode 1 and 2.
